BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Great comebacks in UAAP hoops history

Great comebacks in UAAP hoops history

Did you catch that game between La Salle and UP yesterday? Incredibly, UP was up by 20 points early in the second half when the Green Archer slowly chipped away at the lead. By the third period, they were up already. The Fighting Maroons lost some steam when Alinko Mbah picked up his third foul in the second period and his teammates preferred to shoot from the outside rather than go to the rack. Nevertheless, it was a great game.

Here are some great comebacks in recent UAAP memory and ironically, the UP Fighting Maroons tend to figure in a lot of the meltdowns.

Season 74 FEU-ADMU 2nd Round. FEU up by 6 with 1:01 left in regulation lost to Ateneo in OT 74-67.

Season 74 FEU-UP 2nd Round. UP was leading 48-35 after three quarters but RR Garcia outscored UP 18-5 in the fourth period to rally his team to a 59-53 victory.

Season 71 Aug. 17, 2008 FEU-UST 2nd Round. UST on top 54-41 after three quarters. Final score in favor of FEU as they won 74-69 in OT when Benedict Fernandez and Paul Sanga combined for 13 of the 20 points of the Tamaraws in the fourth period to spark the comeback.

Season 72 Aug 2, 2009 DLSU-UST 1st Round. UST up 72-60 after three quarters when Arvie Bringas scored nine points in the fourth period and four points in OT to rally DLSU to a 101-92 win in OT.

Season 73 Aug 7, 2010. NU-UP 1st Round. UP leading by 41-21 at the halftime break. NU's Kokoy Hermosisima, Shan Mbe and Jolas Terso combined for 30 pts in the second half with 10 points each to rally NU to a 70-66 victory.

  2. I have one in mind though it's not really that recent. Ateneo versus Adamson 2004, the first game after Larry Fonacier suffered a season-ending injury. Ateneo was down by 20 at some point of the game and we still won by an LA Tenorio three.

  9. UST vs La Salle in UAAP 70

Tigers down by 12 in the last minute, 57-69 then Mirza, Japs, Espiritu and Jun Cortez tied it and the game goes to Extra Time...they limit the Archers to 4 points that sealed the game and broke the "Curse of Aldeguer" that has been put in place since 1999

    Final Score: 81-73
