BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Andy Carroll's a Red!

The 22-year old striker from Newcastle United will be wearing the #9 shirt (he also wore that number with the Magpies which was the same number worn by the great Alan Shearer) that was vacated by Fernando Torres when he left for Chelsea. Carroll's a strong player and is dangerous off crosses and corners as he uses his 6'3" frame to the fullest. I've seen him play and at times -- I think of Alan Shearer as well. But if he is more resolute in his strikes and attacks he could be a Drogba-like player. So far he's scored 36 goals since his debut in 2006. Here's hoping that the new blood does wonders for Liverpool.

On another note, I began to watch England when they had Shearer, Steve McManaman, and Gazza on board. It was a great time for English football with Robbie Fowler (another LFC legend) and Michael Owen.

  1. Micky Owen would've been a legend for LFC as well, if he didn't make the money move to Real Madrid :)
