BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

That was some game between Adamson & FEU

You can say that this game had American football undertones.

On one end, Far Eastern University’s RR Garcia ditched his defender Janus Lozada with a quick first step then finding a forest of arms ready to block his shot, he shoveled a pass to Aldrech Ramos who not only made the lay in but also by beating the buzzer.

The Tamaraws’ gallery erupted in euphoria.

But there were 6.9 seconds left on the clock. It could be a lot of time or not much depending on which side of the coliseum you are rooting for.

On the other end, Adamson University’s Leo Austria brought in point guard Lester Alvarez who despite having been checked by FEU’s defense was nonetheless a threat. He positioned himself on FEU’s side of the court where his Tamaraws counterpart Jens Knuttel followed him.

The other Falcons were like wideouts with their respective guards following them to the wing. That left Alex Nuyles to plant himself in the middle to receive the ball and take on his man like a wide receiver.

But as the play unfolded, Eric Camson was on the wrong side of the court – the right. He quickly moved to the left side in case there was a kick out from Nuyles.

As Nuyles went to receive Lozada’s inbound, FEU defender Ping Exciminiano gambled hoping for a steal. Nuyles immediately turned the moment he received the ball and he was off to the basket. Although beaten, Exciminiano was quick to recover and almost matched the high-leaping Falcon stride for stride.

Camson’s man left him to help as Nuyles gathered steam for the drive.

Nuyles nearly made the shot but it rimmed out.

That’s when Camson in one motion moved in to tip the ball in over the two Tamaraws.

There were two seconds left but FEU had no timeouts. Garcia took the inbound and in stride threw up a prayer that wouldn’t be answered today.

The result was a pulsating 64-63 win that handed FEU its first loss of the season leaving the rest of the field owing Austria’s side a lot of thanks for preventing what could have been an FEU sweep

With the win, Adamson moved to solo second at 6-2 right behind FEU which fell to 7-1.

Camson and Nuyles scored 14 points each for the Falcons while RR Garcia was the sole Tamaraw in double figures with 16 points.
