BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

In today's NCAA, San Sebastian & San Beda try to stay undefeated.

San Sebastian, San Beda try to stay undefeated.

The long-awaited showdown between the NCAA defending champions San Sebastian Stags and San Beda Red Lions won’t take place until another week but they will get a close look at one another when they take on separate opponents today at the San Juan Arena.

San Beda, like San Sebastian remained undefeated in six games take on the reeling 1-5 College of Saint Benilde Blazers at 2pm at the San Juan Arena. Red Lions head coach Frankie Lim is happy with his team’s standing but is somewhat concerned with their tendency to be overconfident heading into matches. Their last opponent, the Arellano University Chiefs spotted them a 12-point lead at the half before San Beda woke from their slumber and scored 65 points in the final 20 minutes to the 18 of their foe.

The Blazers in the meantime have waxed hot and cold. Since nearly pulling off the upset of the tournament during a 75-74 loss to San Sebastian, the Blazers fell uncommonly flat to Letran and Mapua leaving head coach Richard del Rosario to wonder about his squad’s state of mind more so since they are up against the Red Lions.

In the main game at 4pm, the Stags square off with the 2-4 Chiefs that is also battling consistency problems. However, San Sebastian head coach Ato Agustin is hoping that his charges will have their game faces on all throughout the match. Against CSB, the Stags dropped their guard and nearly fell prey in the endgame as Blazers Carlo Lastimosa and Mark de Guzman conspired for a fiery wind-up that fell short.

Said Agustin after the match against CSB, “Sometimes, I think that the boys are just waiting for that game against San Beda.” Rick Olivares
