BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

The next Zidane is probably the next Michael Owen

When Real Madrid acquired Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, and Xabi Alonso in the off-season as part of their Galactico II project, I wondered who would be this batch's Michael Owen. When Owen joined the Spanish team after a great years in Liverpool, he was right away a miscast and was gone after sitting on the bench (although he did score 13 goals for them; a clear indication that he should have been given more playing time). From there he moved back to England with Newcastle.

In the present batch of Galaticos, is Benzema, the French star who has been compared to compatriot Zinedine Zidane (for his Algerian ancestry, wearing the same jersey number, and shaven plate), the new Owen? He does have five goals in 15 matches but only gets on the pitch as a substitute for Gonzalo Higuian. Now he has a chance to show his stuff with the former injured for a few weeks. But if nothing happens, he could be gone after a year.

Higuain's Argentine national teammate, Maxi Rodriguez, that darn excellent midfielder, is now with Liverpool. Does that mean the Alberto Aquilani signing is a bust? Not exactly. Hard to tell when no one can figure out what the manager is trying to do. Now forward Ryan Babel has blasted the gaffer who must not be named in his Twitter and website. This club is in total disarray. They need a total makeover including all the way to the owners.

To the racist Juventus fans... they are only strong if they travel in packs. they should be sent to Afghanistan or Iraq so we can see how tough the bastards are.
