BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Messi for a million flashbulbs

Messi… never needed more. This is the 122nd minute of the World Cup Finals. The world has been waiting for Lionel Messi. They offer up prayers on his behalf. it is now or never. The little boy from Rosario, Argentina on behalf of every little boy wearing his shirt. Messi on a million backs. Messi for a million flashbulbs. Messi potentially to crown his stellar career. One kick of the ball. One kick of the football. He's done it before. He's done it many times before in the Nou Camp; around Spain around Europe. He's done it brilliantly for his nation in this competition. He must do it now. Messi must.

Lionel Messi… no… no.. no… No… No… No... It's gone away. It's a gray day for him and for them. The sky blue has become black.

Exquisitely beautiful and painful words in that fateful 122nd minute.

  1. I feel for Messi, but he doesn't need a World Cup to be an all time great. He already is one.

    1. Unfortunately, he will not be put on Football's Mt. Rushmore that so far has Pele and Maradona.
