BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Official UAAP release on the 'suspension' of Bo Perasol

Ateneo coach Bo Perasol has been ordered by the UAAP Board to serve the one-game suspension he incurred for almost violently confronting a De La Salle fan right after the Blue Eagles-Green Archers game two weeks ago.

“Coach Bo was in the game venue [Araneta Coliseum] when he was supposed to be serving his suspension, that is why the board decided that he should be serving the penalty,” said Season 76 secretary treasurer Malou Isip of host Adamson University.

Perasol was at the Big Dome when Ateneo played University of the East (UE) last Sunday, a violation of a UAAP rule that a suspended coach must not be in the playing venue.

Isip stressed the Board is not imposing a second suspension on Perasol, but merely ordering him to serve ban.

Ateneo and UE representatives to the Board did not join the deliberation.

UE sought a clarification on the particular UAAP rule that tasked the UAAP Board to hold a meeting yesterday (Thursday) as the Casa Espanol in Manila. Red Warriors officials has earlier maintained they were not after a forfeiture of their lost game to the Blue Eagles—that resulted to UE’s elimination from the Final Four race—but were seeking clarification for the infraction.

The Board also decided to forfeit Far Eastern University’s five victories where Vangie Soriano played. Soriano was disqualified for playing in a commercial tournament that was held simultaneously with the season.

Here are my thoughts about the decision that I posted before this press release was sent out.

  1. Sir Ricky, Correction on the post, the game was played at the MOA Arena not the Big Dome.

  3. lol, my thoughts too exactly. I was thinking whether the venue [in parethesis] was Rick's or the official circular released by Ms Isip seeing as they were in quotes. Boy, was saying to myself, not only does the board not implement its own rules but it doesn't know what's happening and where games are played lol and all this time deliberating Bo's presence at Araneta lol

Kung pipilosopoin mo yan mga yan, then Bo wasn't at the venue at all since they ruled that Bo was in Araneta when UE-ADMU game was played in MOA har har har

    But if it was just yours Rick, man up man^^ Or coulda wrote there {parentheses mine}

  4. He was banned and therefore he should just have hid inside his room. Locked himself up and just watched the game via studio23. Rules should be followed.

  5. its unthinkable how the Board decided on the issue of the ateneo coach. it should have been a forfeiture, as the rules provided.(the other issues of suspended those players are of no moment with regard to the issue of the ateneo coach. those issues were not raised on time by affected teams; hence a waiver of action against the concerned teams.)

the board interpreted the presence of the ateneo coach in the vicinity of the game venue as "not serving the suspension". hence the Board "orders" the ateneo coach to "serve the suspension" by not being present during ateneo's forthcoming game with ust. what if the ateneo coach does it again in the game with ust?

the fact that the ateneo coach did not make himself present/visible at the bench but was at the vicinity of the venue showed that the coach was very much aware of his suspension and to himself is tantamount to already serving his suspension (by not making himself seen at the bench). in fact, the action of the ateneo coach was an attempt to circumvent the rules of the uaap--hoping not to be seen where he was seen!

it should have been a forfeiture. it will hurt ateneo with the forfeiture but the rules should be followed.

    1. Hey AnonymousSeptember 12, 2013 at 9:42 PM,

Sana the board interpreted na din the presence of the suspended players sa court dba? with or without the complaint, kasi nasa rules naman un e. Bakit aantayin pa na may mgreklamo?

Diba?

    2. Sino ba nagreklamo within the allowable time period? Diba ADMU and UE lang?

  6. Ateneo will not be forfeited. Syempre ateneo yun e. The school ultimately favored by the uaap. Or if i may say owns the uaap.. If it could've been another school. Im sure forfeiture was given. Im sure more dramas will happen in case ateneo will lose to ust! Gagawan nanaman ulit yan ng paraan to reverse the result in favor of ateneo.

  8. Official statement ba yan ng UAAP? They couldn't even get the venue right. How sloppy!

  9. Coach man or player, if suspended ka, wag ka pumunta sa venue tapos!

Kung nasa rules un, ke may magreklamo o wala, nilabag nya batas, so parusahan.

    manigas nlng kayo!

  10. Coach Perasol, is this the "Man among others" attitude that supposedly raises one's consciousness if one gets a Jesuit education? You hid in the dugout because you knew you were suspended and wasn't supposed to be in the venue. The fact that you asked permission to be there should not even be considered, as there are clear cut UAAP rules. or are these rules precisely cut for you Ateneans?
In the light of what just happened, everybody is just Ateneo's stooges:

ADAMSON University: “Coach Bo was in the game venue [Araneta Coliseum] when he was supposed to be serving his suspension, that is why the board decided that he should be serving the penalty,” said Season 76 secretary treasurer Malou Isip of host Adamson University.
(Being the host University, you should not have backed down on this and led the action to police your selves.)
UNIVERSITY of the EAST: Red Warriors officials has earlier maintained they were not after a forfeiture of their lost game to the Blue Eagles—that resulted to UE’s elimination from the Final Four race—but were seeking clarification for the infraction.
(Being the aggrieved party, who has a rule book clearly stating the penalty, you should have demanded that the game be forfeited in favor of UE!)
This is the kind of tyranny we do not want to happend in these games. What kind of values are we imparting on the millions of boys watching collegiate basketball. That if you are rich and powerful, you can get away with most everything.
What was Ms Malou Isip thinking in saying coach Perasol "should be serving his penalty", when in fact, his action of staying out of sight, in the team's dugout clearly demonstrated he was serving his penalty. He knows that he is suspended, that he is not allowed inside the venue, that is why he was hiding in the team's dugout.
This is the effect of colonization. A lot of our people still thinks those who speak better English are better than them, and would rather back down than have a nosebleed trying to express their thoughts in English!

Sige magpakahirap kayo.
(after semis) Hu huh huh, talo tuloy kame sa NU, e twice ba naman to beat sila. Sayang. Wala din kame sa finals :(
