BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Scenes from the Ateneo bonfire

The parking lot of the Ateneo Grade School at 5pm. The second semester bonfire coincided with the Athlete's Night that was held at the Irwin Theater. A bunch of cool bands performed for more than an hour while the athletes had a short program and dinner.

Denden Lazaro was mobbed by all these kids while on her way to the Irwin Theater. There was this one kid who asked if he could hug her and Denden hugged him back in a tres cool moment. Amazing amazing scene. Wish I got a picture of that.

Kiefer Ravena too got a bunch of peeps asking for photos and autographs. It looked like he was in a hurry but he made sure he posed and signed everything.

Our Air Valdez shirts sold pretty well! It was nice to meet some of the fans who purchased the shirt. Got to chat and talk about what they were looking for. Good info for future use.

Of course, the highlight was the lighting of the firewood. It sure was swell to see the Men's Football and Baseball teams honored. In 2006, a bonfire was held for the three-peat football champions. A couple of hundred turned out for the event. This one wasn't nowhere as big as the October bonfire for the Men's Basketball Team but it was pretty good considering it's exam week and a Friday. My best estimate? Three-to-four thousand people.

  1. I'm sure that grade school kid will remember that Denden hug for a long long time.

Thanks for the pictures Sir Rick. Hope you post some more soon (and tell more anecdotes) for us who missed out on the bonfire.

  2. I'm sure more would have gone had it been a Saturday. I really hope the teams that were honored there felt just as loved. There is no doubt that Ateneo Basketball has a special place, but these other teams should at least feel just as appreciated esp because some of them do remarkable things with less.
