BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

The 30th SeaOil Metro Manila Basketball League is fast reaching its conclusion. From a pool of 70 high school teams from all over Metro Manila, the number has now dwindled to 20 squads who are competing in a semifinals win-or-go-home format.

Hope Christian High School upset De La Salle Zobel 73-64 in Division I play to book a seat in the finals where they await the winner of the National University-San Beda game that will be played on this coming Wednesday, January 16 at the San Beda College Gym in Mendiola, Manila.

In Division II competition, the Hoosiers-like run of the Faith Academy Vanguards continued with a 69-58 win over UST’s Team B. Faith Academy will be playing Xavier that squeaked past NU’s Team B, 71-69.

The San Beda Red Cubs Team B ensured that their school has representation in the finals when they tripped brother school San Beda Alabang 68-66. They will be facing Colegio San Benildo Rizal for the Division III crown after the latter crushed Colegio de San Agustin BiƱan, 71-57.

Over at Division IV, NU Team C walloped La Salle College of Antipolo 71-44 to earn the right to play San Beda Team D that outlasted a hard-fighting Espiritu Santo Parochial School 65-61.

De La Salle Zobel salvaged a measure of pride when its girls team crushed sister team La Salle College of Antipolo 68-48 where they await the winner of the Chiang Kai Shek-UNO/Casimiro Ynares Memorial School tussle.

The finals for all five divisions will be played this coming Sunday, January 20, at the San Beda College Gym.
