BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Football shirt culture #2 Liverpool

Despite being a longtime Liverpool fan, I only got my first LFC kit around the time of the 2005 UEFA Champions League. I just wasn't crazy about the "Crown Paints" and "Candy" in front. So when adidas came in as apparel supplier, I picked up their kit. Unfortunately, I am not able to show that here as those shirts are stored in one of my suitcases under my bed. Hahaha. What I do have hanging in my closet are the last three kits. Above is the last LFC shirt to bear "Carslberg" as shirt sponsor. Notice that it has "Anfield" on the nape area. I loved Carlsberg as shirt sponsor. And their tag line of "Probably the best beer in the world" fit right in Liverpool lore. I recall seeing a sign from a fan during the Merseyside parade after winning the 2005 Champions League, "Probably the best feeling in the world." For me that would be winning the Premiership.

Above is the last shirt to be done under adidas and the first with new shirt sponsor Standard Chartered. Love the design on this with the quasi shoulder pads or whatever that is. I have three of this version. I was fortunate enough to attend one of the launch parties tendered by Standard Chartered Bank for the team in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. And the sponsor sure appreciated the presence of a Filipino journo in their launch.

And here's the new kit from Warrior Sports. I just love the old school look and feel of the shirt. It reminds me of the one worn during the 1978 Euro Cup Finals (made by Umbro).  The new LFC kit features cotton feel War-Tech® fabric designed to keep the elements out while letting sweat and moisture escape from your body keeping you dry and comfortable. Two-piece collar with cut and sew placket. Fully embroidered Warrior logo and iconic Liverpool FC crest on upper chest. Embroidered eternal flame detail to outer back neck. 4 way stretch mesh under arm panels for ventilation, comfort and ease of movement. Regular fit with contrast panels to upper chest and lower back, contrast piping detail.

Am really loving this shirt. The new Warriors kits will be available in Manila on June 22 courtesy of Planet Sports that acquired the rights to release them locally. I ordered my kit before that announcement so whatever I get from them goes into my reserve supply (never to be used). Haha. Do I have any shirts with names on the back? Sure I do -- Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres. What I want to get is Martin Skrtel's and Maxi Rodriguez's names on the back. I also have the black Carlsberg shirt as well as the gray long sleeved Standard Chartered shirt.
