BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

One possession said everything about Sunday’s match between Green Archers United and Lions at the University of Makati.

With Lions parking the bus from the opening kickoff, Green Archers tried to cut a swath through the middle of the 4-5-1 defensive formation that was sorely lacking in its compactness. The Adolfo Alicante-coached Archers succeeded twice earlier: first with an excellent 1-2 combination pass between Nikko Villa and Arnie Pasinabo Jr. that the latter struck true in the 35th minute for the match’s first goal; the second, exactly eight minutes later, was a screamer that midfielder Gerald Pacquiao fired away from some 25 yards out that once more cut right through the middle and dove quickly past a diving Sheung Kwan Leung for a 2-nil lead.
