BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Tuesday morning musings

One of the things I look regularly forward to is our planning meets for Rebound magazine. It’s really good to get together with the guys behind the magazine as we swap stories, jokes, and ideas.

We’re actually on our third year and it is said that if a magazine goes past that then it’s proven something and could very well stay on. One might point out that we only come out with three issues a year and while that might be true, it’s more because we’re geared towards the college hoops season. But since last year, we have been toying with the idea of a fourth issue that will make Rebound a quarterly publication. With regards to the content, we just won’t say until it’s actually in production.

Speaking of content, for the new issue (with the rookies on the cover), there are features on DLSU’s Simon Atkins; Letran’s Samboy Lim; rookies and transferees; coaches Jerry Codinera, Ricky Dandan, and Eric Altamirano; Smart Gilas Pilipinas; and team previews.

As for the magazine as a whole, we are learning more as we go one and as we refine our craft. For now, I can say that we will see some new faces and familiar ones in the new ish.

Not sure if I have mentioned it but we are working with UNO Magazine with the distribution of Rebound. We’ve struggled with two different distributors in the past two years and hopefully the third time’s the charm.

Last night… we discussed story ideas and new features and this one should be out right before the college playoffs. As we go into production, maybe then we can tell what the stories will be.

Looking at my stuff for the latest issue, I had a laugh at some of my rankings (mostly Perpetual Help because I did my preview with Paul Nuilan and Marlon Gomez in mind). By the time they were removed for the second time around (two year’s running), I couldn’t change it anymore. I actually picked the Altas to battle for a Final Four spot with the two in harness but well… looks like they’ll stay south of the top of the standings. But this story I will revisit soon.

I was picking Mapua to battle San Beda for NCAA Finals and now they’re 0-3. But San Sebastian is without Jonathan Semira who is out with an ACL tear so what does that make of the Stags?

Speaking with SBC head coach Frankie Lim yesterday, he knows that their creampuff sked is now over as they play the tougher teams. This is where the Red Lions will test their championship mettle. Critics say that SBC would have not won without Sam Ekwe or Sudan Daniel, this is where they get to show their stuff.

On the topic of college hoops, I honestly have misgivings about missing a huge chunk of the UAAP basketball season and the upcoming NBA players’ visit with all the football stuff I’m doing. So far I’ve only seen one playing date of the UAAP and it’s tough not being able to watch the games (I’ve seen almost every game by every team since 2006 except for the one day I was in Singapore two years ago).

Tough loss for the US Women’s Football National Team in the Women’s World Cup Finals against Japan. Four years from now they will have a different lineup.
