BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Notes on the PFF Suzuki U23 Cup in Iloilo

Notes on the PFF Suzuki U23 Cup in Iloilo:
When I went down to the hotel lobby yesterday morning (I was leaving for the GMA7 complex in Alta Tierra), NCR coach Hans Smit called me over. A couple of his players were under the weather. I asked him if he thought it would be a factor especially in the heat. We just had to see.

It was a really hot day and it did become a factor in the game. In fact, Smit gave his boys a nugget to chew on at the half, “If the heat is bothering you it is also bothering them. But you have to play the game. Kaya niyo yan.”

I also wondered if settling down would be a problem. You see three teams – NCR, Bacolod, and Davao are all staying in Iloilo City and in one hotel and it takes anywhere from 30-45 minutes to get to Barotac Nuevo. The home team was staying in Barotac and they were settled down.

If NCR was worried about a rowdy crowd… nada. The home crowd was gracious and fantastic. Thanks, Barotac Nuevo. You were great.

If people are wondering about Iloilo’s game, it’s simple – NCR knows them well and vice versa. So you cancel each other out. For the second time in four matches, NCR attacked from the get-go (the other was against Dipolog) while somewhat – and for lack of a better term – throwing caution to the wind. Was throwing Deo Segunial and David Basa in the attack a risk? It is always risky but it was brilliant. For those who watch UAAP football regularly, the two are dangerous on the attack. And Deo, FYI, was named Best Defender in the last UAAP tourney.

And Iloilo practiced with Mark Ferrer and Peter Sobredo only to be left out of the lineup last night because of the protest. It doesn’t take a Phd in rocket science to figure out that losing two men throws a monkey wrench in one’s rotation. And it certainly hurt that Jenver Vergara went out with an injury.

Honestly, I think and still believe so that NCR is the most dangerous team in the tournament. Not making an excuse here but if they had the same number of games under their belt as the others, they would have beaten all comers. They just played better and better as the games went on.

In trying to assess the NCR team, a lot of players really played well. It would be tough just to name a few players so suffice to say that they did good.

But if I were Iloilo, I’d be worried. They pulled the rabbit out of this one, but the game was eerily reminiscent of their match against Bacolod which the Negros Occidental team won 1-0. They dominated that match. Misfortune hit NCR. But congratulations to Iloilo. If they find their groove that was on display early in the Visayas regionals they’ll be a tough team to beat.

It’s also a bloody shame, that people are not able to watch Team Masbate coached by former UST keeper and current assistant head coach Kim Versales. They are simply fun to watch despite missing a few key players. They play terrific defense and play even more exciting offense. This team has many players from UE and a few from UST. The hallmark is their disciplined and controlled passing game.

There are questions arising on why NCR did not have it cluster elimination or regionals. The PFF when mapping out the competition placed NCR as a region. There was also a budget allotted for an NCR tournament but it was decided to use the budget for a tryouts from the colleague leagues. And it was the PFF that said that they can pick their players from the NCAA and UAAP which has always been the practice. Since there are no competitions of that sort save for the collegiate leagues and the UFL, then a selection was decided.

Hope that clears up everything. But keep in mind that many football associations were unable to properly prepare given the time frame involved. By next year's U-23 competition, it will get better.

  1. so hindi na talaga makakalaro si mark at si peter?btw saan na si nicolas leonora?bakit bigla syang nawala sa line-up?...

  2. nope. unless someone above does some magic. The two were not in the regionals lineup. You can pick up from the cluster that you play but the two were not listed.

  3. How about NCR not playing in the Regionals ? is that even fair that they are automatically qualified ?

  4. Nag backfire ang pag automatic qualify ng 2 NCR teams. Hindi sila nakalaro as a whole team so walang chemistry at nangangapa sa umpisa ng quarterfinals.

  5. this is only shows the unfair treatment NCR should join in Luzon elims, divide luzon into two.....if there is fairness everybody should join in the elimination rounds....NCR knew that the elimination around the phl has started, why not they start training early...they have all the luxury because the had collected players automatically into two groups....this is only shows of there overconfidence...and it doesnt mean the a person plays football on the NCAA and UAAP are the best player in the PHL...i think not...show respect, fair treatment to the visayas and mindanao....

  6. they cant start early because of the UAAP season

  7. UAAP football season starts January and ends in March. I think NCRFA should do more work.

  8. It's not a question of doing more work. It's a matter of better planning and scheduling of tournaments by the PFF. U19, U23, and CLub Championships all happening at the same time is not an ideal situation. Players overlap in their commitments and that taxes budgets. To be informed weeks before a tourney starts isn't a good idea.

  9. Yeah ! ganun nangyari kay Peter Sobredo ! one of the unlisted players of IFA , hindi sya nakasama sa regional tournament , dahil sa national university games sa Dipolog or dumaguete, !

  10. About the Protest against Mark Ferrer and Peter Sobredo!

There is in fact no rule that prohibits a provincial association to include in its roster, players belonging to its... own football association who were unable to play for them during the regional eliminations.

The sole reason of the protest is that both of them did not play in the regionals!

IF there is a rule that no one should play in the Nationals without playing in the regionals

then NCR teams did not play in the regionals . All Players should not be playing in the Nationals.

There is some loop holes in the rules I think.

  11. Do you even understand what it says? The rule states that you must get from your own cluster. Wag mo na ipasok yung member ng kung ano ano. If you guys have a problem with that then complain to the person who drafted the rules who is in fact from Barotac Nuevo. Wag niyo na pagdiinan kung ano ano yung tama o mali. If that's the rule that's the rule. As for loop holes. Yes there are. But complain to the person who drafted the rules.

  12. Yes , tama , there are loop holes talaga. ! nangyayari palagi yan sa National Tournament, Mabuti lang walang over age protest ang nangyayari , common factor ito , sa past tournaments. !

If The rule states that you must get from your own cluster . then What Cluster does the NCR belong ? bakit nasa Nationals na sila agad.

  13. so saan na ang true purpose of this competition na to select the best of the best for U23 team if they barred players that has a valid reason why they are not on the qualifiers?..and putting a up an all star team that composed of players from luzon visayas and mindanao then automatically qualified... kasalanan pa ngayon ng taga iloilo dahil sa kamalian din ng taga iloilo that drafted the rules...hope next year hindi na mangyayari to..and sana next year wala nang ma qualify automatically..

  14. Pare, mali mali naman ang mga argument mo. Hindi lagi yung best ang pinipili sa isang team. You chose who is available and who fits the system or whatever. The fault with Iloilo is not reading the rules. Puro assumption. No one is trying to penalize anyone. Hindi lang naman sila ang nagsuffer sa rules. Lahat. Walang buenas doon. They also went straight to the Visayas finals so what is your problem? Mindanao and Luzon were the only ones that went through cluster eliminations. If anyone should complain its them. Not you. Next time check your facts and your argumentation.

  15. The rules and the tourney can use a lot of tweaking. Everyone had to abide by that. If you read what I have been writing carefully, teams like Dipolog, Dumaguete, Laguna, NCR, Davao were also unable to avail of players because of PRISAA, school, the rules or whatever. For sure the tourney will be improved next year. Be glad your team was not docked a game for playing them. Or else they'd be out. Everyone noticed it. Like the club championship, the Rizal team did the same thing by adding a player who wasn't supposed to be there. Four teams protested. Are the rules just? Maybe not. But until it is amended then we have to live by them.
