BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Iloilo, Masbate win Suzuki U23 Quarterfinals opener

FAMILIAR FOES. Iloilo's Ronald Batisla-Ong and NCR's Nathan Octavio chase down the ball in their matchup at the UPLB in the Laguna Quarterfinals of the PFF Suzuki U23 National Cup. Batisla-Ong plays for UST that recently lost to Octavio's UP Diliman in the UAAP Season 73 Men's Football finals. Iloilo asserted its might with a 7-0 win.

PANAAD, BACOLOD -- Luzon topnotcher Masbate showed that they are for real in the PFF Suzuki Under-23 National Cup when they beat Mindanao second placer 1-nil yesterday May 6, 2011 at the start of the Group A quarterfinals in Bacolod City.

The Masbate team of coach Kim Versales arrived in Bacolod late in the evening before match day and didn’t get a minute of practice. But Versales’  team showed fine pace and an unstoppable two–man game in the flanks between midfielder Aaron Altiche and attacking midfielder David Fornea that Dipolog has no solution for. That partnership bore several decent scoring chances of which they were able to capitalize on the 15th minute when Fornea blasted a cross past the goalkeeper.

Even with Jerry Barbaso in harness (who arrived on the day of the match), the absence of Tulang, who scored five goals in the Mindanao regionals, told heavily for coach Reginald Jukes.

Dipolog’s ground game came to life in the second half when Fornea was sent off for a reckless challenge on Barbaso and for pushing the referee. But Dipolog was mostly reduced to taking long shots that were either wide or went straight to the keeper.

Said Versales, “Malaking bagay na red card si Fornea. Napilitan kami mag hold ng formation namin. Tapos for the next game na NCR kalaban wala siya.”

Over at the Group B quarterfinals in Laguna, Iloilo flashed deadly form as they crushed NCR Team A 7-nil at the UP Los Baños pitch. The match, played at 8am, didn’t seem to bother the Ilonggos against an NCR side that obviously had no chemistry and seemed sluggish.

Midfielder Chester Braga scored a brace for the Ilonggos (50, 54) while Peter Sobredo (20), Jewer Vergara (39), Romeo Martinez (60), Shirmar Felongco 71) and German Doronilla (79) added a goal apiece.

“It’s a good game for us kasi, maganda naman yung pinakita nung team we have to win kasi gusto rin naming makapasok sa semi-finals, yung NCR ngayon lang siguro nagkasama sama yang mga yan kaya ganyan yung laro,” said Iloilo coach Marjo Allado.

In the second match in Los Baños, Davao and host team Laguna battled to a 2-2 draw. Davao, the Mindanao group leader scored six seconds into the match when Jovan Benitez’ tested Laguna’s keeper with a long ball and found him wanting. But the home side equalized in the 39th minute when Rafael Castro’s volley found the back of the net. Laguna went ahead in the second half after a Janboy Castro goal in the 58th minute. But Davao tied the match with a spectacular injury time goal by Edwin Giganto to take a point.

As of press time, NCR Team B, coached by Hans Smit and Adolfo Alicante was still playing Visayas leader Bacolod which is coached by Norman Fegidero Jr.

  1. What a shameful result, 7-nil. NCR B doesn't deserve to be there. Cebu FA deserve this slot than them and could give a better competition. PFF should learn from this. Visayas deserves 3-4 slots.

  2. Cebu FA? I rather have NORFA there.

  3. NORFA is depleted line-up(missing 6). They wont give the best competition. Imagine the Azkals missing 6 key members, they would be like the Azkals who were massacred by a Japanes University. Cebu FA can make it more exciting having a complete line-up. After those 2 loses and 2 wins, they have their confidence and chemistry back. They would be more competitive against Iloilo the second time around, in my opinion.

  4. disagree. If Iloilo did not have players down with diarrhea they would have scored more. Half their team had the stomach flu. Am not being biased but there it is.

  5. Sir, please check, the second goal of Laguna came from John Kevin De Castro "Jamboy", and the 2nd goal in favor of DAVAO was from an own goal by Laguna defender Hamid Pasion.

    Thanks!

  7. Rick, if there was one more slot, who would like to take it, Cebu FA or NORFA? IMHO, Cebu is stonger and with a little more time to practice, they can more competitve.

  8. Theoretically, Cebu is stronger. But they are wracked by internal politics. So if they cannot get their act together they'll be roadkill.

Cebu FA can make it more exciting having a complete line-up...

  14. @ TgaCPU, If you have any brains, the entrance exams were at the same time the Visayas Qualifier began. I'm not saying they are still taking exams now. LMAO. Yes I said "more competitive agaisnt Iloilo" the second time around, but I was refering to Cebu FA, if you know how to read a sentence. LMAO

  15. but they beat cebu...and given a second time around they will still beat them...as i said not this time...not with this line-up...but i believe cebu ang mangunguna this coming years..sa age group nila palagi silang nasa top...ayus..peace na dong...sori na lang at kinukulang sila sa players...bawi na lang next year...malamang cebu naman ang papasok...

  16. @ tgacpu, yes Iloilo would probably beat them almost all the time but it will be more competitive each time around especially bcoz Iloilo's defense is not that great in my opinion. But we can never be sure, that is football.

Peace bro! For us, we just have to wait for next year. Go NOFA and IFA! Go Visayas!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Amen..Expect next year it will be more competitive...Last day na bukas...Nofa pa lang ang sure na pasok..good luck sa lahat ng team...Go Visayas..Go Philippine Football!

  18. Another Cebu Football team slaughtered in Iloilo ! ! ! 8-0 against Iloilo ! half court game ! no deadly strikes from Cebu Attack and Iloilo's goalkeeper seems to be bored sometimes .

  19. Ang pinagtataka ko lang bakit dalawang teams ang NCR ? sana binigay lang sa iba ang slot!

Mark Ferrer(azkals) Francis Gustilo , and Joven Bedic are members on the same team. Kasama si Rhante Bayquin, Most of the Iloilo players are teammates of Joven Bedic(of bacolod)

    GO IFA and NOFA !

  20. Apparently, you didn't read the rules. Two teams from Visayas, Mndanao, Luzon and NCR will compete in quarters. Kaya 2 NCR team. And sorry. And it was Bedic's choice to play for Bacolod and not for Iloilo.
