BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Next on my to buy list -- a New York Cosmos jersey

To die for. Before I swore my allegiance to Liverpool, I was a fan of the New York Cosmos. There were only three teams for me then -- the Cosmos, the New York Yankees, and the Philadelphia 76ers (Dr. J fan here). But the Cosmos -- how can you go wrong? Pele. Franz Beckenbauer. Giorgio Chinaglia  (pronounced Kee-nal-ya). Carlos Alberto. Werner Roth. Johan Neeskens. And now they are reviving this legendary team. I already have the DVD "Once in A Lifetime" and hope to soon add this classic jersey to my collection. And it's made by Umbro no less!

Another I hope to get soon -- Brazil's Vasco da Gama.

Some people have written in and asked what are my fave football jerseys that I have. Without ranking them, here they are: Liverpool (generic and Steven Gerrard), Chelsea (Didier Drogba), DC United, Seattle Sounders, Ajax Amsterdam (ABN Amro), Argentina (generic and Gabrielle Batistuta and Juan Roman Riquelme), France (generic and Thierry Henry, Sidney Govou, and Zinedine Zidane), Real Madrid (generic and Zinedine Zidane), Barcelona (generic and Bojan Krkic), Juventus, AC Milan (generic and Paolo Maldini), Fulham (Neil Etheridge), Croatia, Le Mans, Vietnam, and a few more. And pretty soon -- a Rob Van Persie Arsenal!

Will try and get a picture of everything one of these days. Hahaha. I used to collect basketball jerseys (and I do have quite a lot) but have switched to football and hockey. Speaking of hockey, wouldn't it be cool to have a Vladislav Tretjak USSR jersey? Cold War Soviet Union!

  3. Rick,

They are not officially part of MLS yet. They are not yet a team and they haven't accomplished anything yet but now they are selling jerseys already. People are so nostalgic that they are willing to fork money for a nonexistent team. There are other groups from the New York area that are bidding to get a team. Even when they get a team, with the salary cap, they will be not be able to get the big name stars they used to have. Maybe you should wait for the announcement from MLS that they are officially in.

  4. Yes I know they are not with the MLS. That is not the point. I am talking about the jersey. They can be playing in Thailand for all I care.

  5. Hey Rick...how about a DC United jersey ;-)? Though not as legendary as the Cosmos of yore, our DCU team *is* the winning-most club in MLS. We've recently hit a dry spell, but I am hopeful that in due time, we'll be the tops once more! Go take a peak at our new 3rd jersey...it's a good looking kit, too!

  6. Hi, Chino. I have a DC United jersey. It's my favorite MLS jersey alongside Seattle's. I got it about two years ago. I love the Volkswagen logo in front. I think it's the coolest. I have the white one though. The black version is just as awesome. If I have extra money will be getting it too.
