Thoughts from Panaad
by rick olivares
Looks like the starting eleven is down to this:
Etheridge
Del Rosario Gier Borromeo Gener
J. Younghusband Jonsson De Jong Caligdong
Araneta P. Younghusband
Without Chris Greatwich, the Azkals coaching staff will move Ray Jonsson to his spot in the middle where he is at a more natural position. Don’t be deceived by Roel Gener’s smallish frame. The quality as a multi-talented player is there. He can swing to the mid or on D.
There’s a possibility that Fil-Am Jason Sabio could also play in the back four. He partners well with Ay and knows how to use his size. Could there be a surprise addition to the starting XI? Possibly. Fitness and skill will be the deciding factor here. With Christ Greatwich, Mark Drinkuth, and David Basa unavailable, the new additions the squad include Jason Sabio and Patrick Hinrichsen. Simon Greatwich also returns to the squad that includes Suzuki Cup veterans Neil Etheridge, Aly Borromeo, Anton del Rosario, Rob Gier, Roel Gener, Chieffy Caligdong, Jason de Jong, Ray Jonsson, James Younghusband, Ian Araneta, Phil Younghusband, Eduard SacapaƱo, Gerry Barbaso, Joebel Bermejo, Kim Relucio, Nestor Margarse Jr., Peter Jaugan, Reymark Palmares, and Mark Ferrer.
The team goes into a 343 when going on the attack. But reverts to its traditional 442 formation on defense.
Chieffy Caligdong looks to be healthier now. He wasn’t 100% in the Suzuki Cup but he is moving better on the pitch.
The Panaad field is one of our better pitches but it might need a little watering to make it a little softer. Unlike at the Bung Karno which was a little more soft (at least for the first leg of the semis) for one’s comfort.
Dennis Cagara and Jerry Lucena would have really helped this squad but were here to fix passport problems. You’ll see these guys play later on.
Big pool of talent. It’s looking like we’re going to field a very good U-23 team.

I think that security should improved even if only for practices. I already reported that there will be 723 security personnel present. Some of them should be deployed for the practices.
From the new Bacolod Airport all the way to the stadium, the streets are lined with streamers and banners about the match and the Azkals. Big time event.
Thank you, thank you Rick, for detailed analysis, insight, and integrity in your reports. While I can't resist to read about the Azkals in the mainstream media, I find it disappointing and erroneous. Makes me think I can't believe the other aspects of the story that I don't know about.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, this is essentially the same team so I have confidence in them. Now that you've reported this, perhaps the Mongolians will start attacking the Caligdong/Gener side! Still, I have confidence in the Azkals.
Go get 'em!
So William Gueridonn will not play tomorrow against Mongolia?
ReplyDeleteLolo Gener joining the attack is a big joke...
ReplyDeleteHi Rick, Do you know why William Guerridon was not chosen? Was he not in the initial 30 man list list submitted to AFC or was it passport issues? I think a young and talented striker like he is would have been a better selection than 38 y/o Yanti Barsales as he seems to have scored a few goals in camp especially if they need to score more goals at the end of the game.
ReplyDeleteDennis Cagara and maybe Jerry Lucena aside from passport issues also have to submit a change of affiliation with FIFA from Denmark to the Philippines since they represented Denmark in youth competitions when they were younger. This takes a month or two to process. I don't know how far along they are in this process. BTW, did you find out how they solved the dual citizenship issue?
Will didn't make it in time for the registration. But in the next competition he'll be there.
ReplyDeleteAnyone know where you can watch or stream the match or a replay for Azkal fans outside of the country?
ReplyDeleteI watched the suzuki cup group stage games online before flying to Jakarta but can't make it this time.
Btw i don't mean to promote any illegal broadcasts.
Thanks in advance!
Rick I missed your detailed analysis for the azkals...much different from the mainstream media. pls keep it up... on posting technical stuff and maybe some background of the new azkal players
ReplyDeleteGener LB and Jonsson CM? Baliktad ata yan! And you believe that Gener will be picked ahead of someone like S. Greatwich?
ReplyDeleteRegarding Gener and Jonsson, I am reporting what I see and I have it validated. Mas marunong ka pa.
ReplyDeletelast suzuki cup our left side(where gener and jonsson are) is okey.. our right side is not.. it was seen in our games in the aff..
ReplyDeletewhen cagara and shrock.. it will both be solid.. LB abd RB.. ^_^
With your starting lineup, I think the Suzuki cup lineup was a lot stronger esp. since our midfield general Chris Greatwich is not available this time. Fortunately we are facing a weaker team so it should be sufficient.
ReplyDeleteYeah can anybody stream the games for us outside the country.
BTW Thanks for the article Rick. I miss your daily reports and inside info on the Azkals. Good to have you back.
BTW Do you know when the tryouts for the U-23 team starts? I know some Div I players here in the US who would like to tryout incl. a 4 year starter at Loyola Marymount who also played for the U-20 team at Chivas USA, an MLS side who reached the finals of the USL U-20 division.
ReplyDeleteI agree with post here about mainstream media , yung iba kualng sa research madami mga mis information....kaya lagi ko binibisita blog mo sir mas accurate kasi ang mga reports..Thanks
ReplyDeleteSir Rick, parang ngustohan ni Coach Weiss na ilagay sa Midfield si Jonsson with J. De Jong just like their scrimmage game against Team B...
