BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

In the Huddle @ the 1st National Sportswriting Congress

When Josiah Albelda invited me to participate as a speaker in the In the Huddle 1st National Sportswriting Congress, I declined. I did so because I didn't think that high school students really didn't take too many things seriously let alone sportswriting. I did feel his disappointment but I didn't buckle from the way I felt. About two months later, a common friend of ours, Eddie Ching, was discussing the seminar again and I reiterated my lack of interest. But after a while, I warmed up to the idea of inspiring them and maybe giving them a direction to take when they went to college. So I signed up for it. And like I told the kids today (there was a smattering of college students), the Man Above sends you where you need to go. So no regrets going and I certainly had a good time. I came in my faux Steve Jobs attire -- long sleeved shirt (sorry I didn't have it in black), faded white jeans, and white rubber shoes. I even had it down to the Mac. Hahaha. It was easily the highlight of the day for me as I ran off to a working lunch meet at an officemate's house in La Vista and then to a voice recording for a video I am doing for the AAA. Guess what? I conducted almost my entire talk in Filipino. Cool, huh? Thanks, Josiah! And thanks to all the participants. Hope you enjoyed the talk.
