BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

This is the real reality TV, New York Jets. Hey ho, let's go!

We're headed thataway!!!

Well that was an ugly and sloppy game last week when the Baltimore Ravens visited the New York Jets at the new stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Jets QB Mark Sanchez passes for 74 yards and zero TDs.  The defense held somewhat but they cannot forever when the offense is sputtering. Did anyone think they'd reprise last year's feel good campaign?

Watching the game against the New England Patriots, did I think they'd make their stops and defend their home turf for a second straight week before heading for the road? Well, the Pats beat Chad Ochocinco, Terrell Owens, and the Cincinnati Bengals 34-24 in Week 1 even if Carson Palmer put up better passing numbers than Tom Brady. But Brady's 81-yard march for a 1-yard TD by Ron Gronkowski was classic. It isn't of course all about stats.

But as good as Brady was against the Jets, Mark Sanchez came up big in the second quarter when it seemed that New York was headed towards another miserable homestand. Six minutes possession one one drive with a neat 10-yard pass to Braylon Edwards for a TD! The Jets were on the board and there was no looking back. They just outplayed the Patriots from there on for a 28-14 win. Does this turn their season around? We'll see because Miami - losers for the last couple of years are now 2-0. And they've got so many off field distractions. C'mon!!!

So how about them New Orleans Saints? 2-0 and a pasting of the San Francisco 49ers.

  1. Rick,

there are a lot of teams who are surprising 2-0... Note the following:

    Kansas City Chiefs
    Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Speaking of the Bucs, one analyst predicted a 2-14 record. Well, they now have the 2 wins. What do you think? Ooops!

  2. You think the Bucs will lose their next 14 games? Hahaha. It's possible you know. But.... give it four weeks then we'll see some separation all around the league. Even the Saints despite their two wins looked somewhat vulnerable at times. I think their defense has carried them thus far.

And for Indianapolis to go 1-1.... does that say something about them or the Giants? Hahaha.

    See ya 'round, Chris.

  3. The Jets are a tough team to figure out. They looked awful the first game, and looked like contenders on Sunday. They really need to let Sanchez take over the offense and see what he can do.
