BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

NCAA Statistical points leaders after first round

Today's games at the San Juan Arena:

2pm San Beda vs Perpetual Help -- wipeout here.

4pm San Sebastian vs. JRU -- the more interesting one that can go either way. Key match up here is Marvin Hayes and Calvin Abueva. If they can stay on the floor and provide their respective teams with great all-around play then they stand a chance of winning. But this also depends on Joe Etame's playing longer minutes. Honestly, I think for JRU to get the most out of Etame it's by not calling primary plays for him. Let him poach. Let him get those shots in the flow. Setting him up on the post has almost always been unsuccessful.

For MVP & Statistical Points leaders:
1. Calvin Abueva (SSCR)
2. Sudan Daniel (SBC)
3. Borgie Hermida (SBC)
4. David Marcelo (SBC)
5. Ronald Pascual (SSCR)
6. Marvin Hayes (JRU)
7. Claude Cubo (EAC)
8. Jake Pascual (SBC)
9. Garvo Lanete (SBC)
10. Andrian Celada (AU)

The Red Lions are just heads above everyone else here. Five of them in the Top 10! But these are first round stats and if the way things are going, I'd say the NCAA Mythical Five for Season 86 would end up with Abueva, Daniel, Hermida, Ronald Pascual, and Hayes. It would be a nice send-away for Hermida and Hayes who will be moving on to the pros immediately after.

And for Rookie of the Year, looks like Jaypee Mendoza of San Beda will take it.

Scoring leader:
1. Carlo Lastimosa (CSB)
2. Calvin Abueva (SSCR)
3. Arnold Danganan (UPHSD)
4. Andrian Celada (AU)
5. Ronald Pascual (SSCR)
6. Claude Cubo (EAC)
7. Garvo Lanete (SBC)
8. Argel Mendoza (EAC)
9. Jet Vidal (UPHSD)
10. Franz Dysam (CSJL) & Borgie Hermida (SBC)

All I can say is, I am not surprised that Lastimosa is leading the pack here. It's your loss, Ateneo. Should have taken care of him.
