Efren `Bata’ Reyes and Francisco `Django’ Bustamante rallied back from two racks down to pip Germany’s Ralf Souquet and Thorsten Hohmann 11-9 to regain the World Cup of Pool title they last held in 2006 before a packed and boisterous Annex at the SM North Edsa Mall Sunday night.
The two pool legends survived two grueling matches in a nine-hour span to win back the championship of the meet they first dominated during its inaugural staging in Wales in 2006.
None was more important than their come-from-behind win over the deadly German pair in a game that saw the Filipinos bounce back from a 7-9 deficit. Earlier, Souquet and Hohmann frustrated the tandem of Dennis Orcollo and Ronnie Alcano in the other semifinal pairing, 9-6 to prevent an all-Filipino finals. The Germans shook off a shaky start to take the lead midway but the Filipino pool legends began to work their magic. "Efren Reyes is my favorite player. This finals match with him and Django Bustamante is a highlight of my career," said Souquet.
Reyes and Bustamante won the top prize of $60,000 while Sosquet and Hohmann take home $30,000.
