BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Barangay Long

Hi Rick,

Do you remember Kirk's shot as a freshman against UST? It happened on or about Aug 30or 31? We celebrated his birthday the next night with a big bbq and had lots of fun out side the Moro gym after practice.

This year again, UST just days before his birthday he played against UST and scored 21 points for a 21st birthday present for team! Haha!

The attached picture came as some of the players, coaches, managers came to visit our children's home in Cainta. You see the kids in the home have been the faithful following of Barangay Long, so it was special for them to welcome the team and offer advice for future wins!!!

Kirk enjoyed the get together with his Ateneo family at the children’s home.

Take care
Jeff

Rick's note:
When I wrote about the father and son sequence between Jeff and Kirk Long in The Long Shot, I was privy to a tender and moving moment that I was embarrassed to witness. Mr. Jeff invited me to join them for dinner that night and it wasn’t the first. I’ve since been to their place and headquarters in Antipolo where I took videos of their mission there. After the season’s done, I’ll be hightailing up there to finish the story and the video. I got home past 11pm from Halikinu Radio when Mr. Long texted me about sharing this anecdote and picture. We’re sharing it with you here at Brew.
