BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

"An unforgiving line-up in an unforgiving park."

Thus spoke Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona after his team was wiped out by the vengeful New York Yankees who finally got a 13-4 win on the board against their rivals; their first in nine matches thus far.

The Bronx Bombers roughed up Red Sox pitcher John Smoltz for eight runs in nine hits in a little over three innings. "I felt good coming in," said the former All-Star pithcer. "Just didn't make the pitches."

The Yankees' bats had plenty of pop during the game as they got home runs from Melky Cabrera, Johnny Damon, Mark Teixiera, and Jorge Posada. Posada, honored the late Yankee catcher and captain Thurman Munson by painting "#13" on his catcher's mask.

Over 49,000 people watched the game in the new Yankee Stadium, the biggest to date.

The second of the four-game series will be played tomorrow when AJ Burnett goes up against Josh Beckett. The Yankees have MLB's best record at 66-42 while Boston is 3.5 games back at 62-45.
