BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Goaltending, galacticos, and the eye of the Tiger

Was that goal-tending on Pau Gasol yesterday as he tried to block Courtney Lee with that botched alley-oop in regulation? I'm not sure what the rules are but he touched the rim and the net when trying to block the shot. I caught it again on the replay last night and still felt that way. So was it? Someone enlighten me here. Nice to know people in the US picked this up and reported on it.

OKAY, I'M CONVINCED IT WAS GOALTENDING.

After all that posturing about loving AC Milan, Kaka agrees to play for Real Madrid for six years. Well, Madrid will never be confused with Manchester City so therein lies the reason. Ninety-two million reasons.

Now will Cristiano Ronaldo be the next to play for Los Blancos as the second galactico project gets underway in the Santiago Bernabeu?

And will Cesc Fabregas return to Barcelona under Pep Guardiola? That could happen.

That was far from Tiger Woods best performance at the Memorial Tournament but he put on a great charge when the going got tough. So enough of that talk about his surgically-repaired knee and his heart and will to win. You saw it right there. Three birdies in his last four holes to break out of a four-way tie and win by one stroke. I was jumping up and down there in that last drive.
