BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

New World Order?

In spite of the shocking spat between Marseille manager Eric Gerets and team owner Robert Louis-Dreyfus that lead to the former's decision to step down after the season title or not, the team is focused on annexing another French Ligue 1 crown. If Marseille, two points clear above Bordeaux and six ahead for seven-time champions Lyon, get the maximum points in their five remaining matches, then there will be a new champion.

Is the old order of traditional champions at an end?

Bayern Munich, perennial Bundesliga champions sacked Jurgen Klinsmann after his side fell to third place following a disappointing home loss to Schalke last week.

VfL Wolfsburg is on top with 57 points while hard-charging Hertha Berlin is second with 55. Bayern isn't out of it with five matches at hand but it has made the club's brass worried.

Wolfsburg despite its shocking loss to relegation-bound Energie Cottbus is lead by twin stikers (off a 4-4-2) Grafite who is from Brazil and Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko who have strapped the team onto their backs. Wolfsburg's midfield and defense has been superb but they have to be concerned about their ability to find goals from others as its only Zvjesdan Misimovic and Christian Gentner who provided support (if you can call 5 and 4 golas ample support).

They look to take the Bundesliga title from Bayern which has lfited the domestic trophy six times this new millennium.

Over at the Italian Serie A which is have severe problems with the Serie B teams, Internazionale has a seven-point cushion over AC Milan which took over from faltering Juventus. As with most other European leagues, there are five games to go but if the Rossoneri hope to bag their first title since the 2003-04 season, the three-peat champs will have to really falter.

In the Iberian peninsula, the race for the La Liga comes down to this weekend's El Classico between leaders Barcelona and two-time champs Real Madrid. Four points seprates the two and if Los Blancos can wrestle away three points from Sam Eto'o and company that would leave them a very manageable one point behind.

Lastly in the English Premier League, while two-time champs Manchester United are in pole position to take a third and eleventh crown, Liverpool and Chelsea are crowding them for an exciting photo-finish.

So who do we see here finishing the season as champs:
Ligue 1: Marseille
Bundesliga: VfL Wolfsburg
Serie A: Internazionale
La Liga: Barcelona
English Premier League: My heart says Liverpool but my mind says realistically, Manchester United.
