BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

The FilOil Tourney

My usual katambay at the Fil Oil Tournament: Coach Leo Austria, Mike Abasolo, Chris Soler. Missing sa katambay Ariel Vanguardia. O sige, Dino Aldeguer. Next time, bro.

Who I'm liking this FilOil Tournament:
Ryan Roose Garcia - FEU
Jay Eguilos - FEU
Calvin Abueva - San Sebastian
Allen Etrone - Adamson
Lionel Manyara - Adamson
Eric Salamat - Ateneo
Nonoy Baclao - Ateneo
Kevin Alas - Letran
Marvin Hayes - JRU
James Sena - JRU
Mar Villahermosa - San Beda
Bam Bam Gamalinda - San Beda
Jeff Morial - Benilde
Raffy Ynion - Perpetual Help
Mike Silungan - UP

I have not seen UE, NU, and DLSU so I can't choose yet.

Who should chill out? Rabeh Al-Hussaini. C'mon, man. Just play the game. Enough of the whining and complaining. It's becoming really tiring and unbecoming of the UAAP MVP. Team captain ka pa naman.

San Sebastian Stags. Wow. These guys are fun to watch. But my sources tell me that some of them never did establish residency. Sige we'll see.

San Beda needs a go-to guy. If Borgie Hermida does not return in time then that could be Garvo Lanete or Bam Bam Gamalinda. But Coach Ariel feels that Ogie Menor will still make a comeback.

That is one frightening FEU team. I want to know where in the blue hell do they get all those tall guys. When discussing that with Mike Abasolo, I quipped that they either grow these guys or have a factory assembly line of bigs... hence, Fabrica Eastern University. Hahahaha. But these guys are plenty dangerous. Whew!

What can I say about Boris Aldeguer? I think in a short amount of time, he's made Perpetual Help more organized. The Altas are competitive in the first half but are unable to sustain their drive in the second half. But good job so far, Coach. I saw what you did at DLSZ and now at UPHSD, not too bad.

With Dave Dualan, the balik-GM of the tournament.

Oping Sumalinog has been playing well. And against FEU, he showed why he is ready to step up.

Chatting with Ariel Vanguardia outside the JRU dugout after their disappointing match with Ateneo. Coach Ariel will be Head Coach in Red Bull Barako's game versus Coca Cola in the PBA on Sunday. Regular Head Coach Leo Isaac has been taken ill so the JRU bossman will be in charge. Good luck!
