BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Inspiring a New Golden Generation

Will this win spur American interest in tennis? I sure hope so. I followed that 1992 team captained by McNasty and featured Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, and Jim Courier. Watching those guys on the US Davis Cup team created a lasting impression in me. I'll always remember that match against Switzerland and the US was losing with their tepid play. John McEnroe slammed his team in the locker room and read them the riot act. When the team came out for their next matches, you would have thought you were watching an NBA game with all the hollering, chest-bumping, and trash talking. And that was from Pete and Andre against the Swiss no less!

Aside from the US' first Davis Cup title since 1995, it was nice to see James Blake get a meaningful win. here's hoping it lights a fire under him and Andy Roddick.
