Holy Family Academy wins 1st
match of tourney
by rick olivares
It has been a maddening
tournament for coach Abel Nunag and his Holy Family Academy girls volleyball
team. It has been a while since they played in their local league. For the Rebisco
Volleyball League, they have been less than sharp taking four consecutive
losses.
Down to their last match against (1-3)
Leyte National High School, there was hope in the air for HFA as they took the
first set, 25-20.
Come the second set, LNHS’s
Gabrielle Caidic put the hurt on HFA with eight consecutive serves where Nunag’s
squad failed to get off a good attack. Nunag sent his starters to the bench
save for setter Aira Cardines. It didn’t help as Leyte took the set 25-16.
Come the third and final set, HFA’s
bench righted the ship and although they were playing better, Leyte stayed in
step and knotted the score at 20-all.
Nunag looked to the bench and
sent back starting open spiker Jolina Dela Cruz who was benched for part of the
second set and much of the third. Now composed, Dela Cruz hammered home three
spikes that were wrapped around two Leyte errors.
The last point coming off a quick
attack that found a hole in the back of Leyte’s defense.
Holy Family Academy had their
first win of the preliminaries.
“Big win para sa amin,” glowed
Nunag post-match. “Mas relaxed yung mga bata ngayon at hindi bumitaw.”
Dela Cruz topscored for her team
with 10 points.
“Sana meron pa isang panalo,”
added Nunag who couldn’t help but break out into a wide grin. “Sana.”
Holy Family Academy and Leyte
National High School have one more match in the classification round which
takes place on Saturday, November 25.
