I was following that Twitter hullaballoo by the Detroit Pistons' Charlie Villanueva over the trash talking episode with the Boston Celtics' Kevin Garnett. And honestly, I came away extremely disappointed with KG. As more and more people came out with diatribes against KG, I started adding them and well, maybe he really is a phony tough guy. In the second year of "The Brotherhood" campaign by adidas two years ago, the two of them got into a near fight. Then in last year's playoffs, there they went at it again after a Howard elbow struck Garnett in the face. The latter might be warranted because Howard was clearly wrong but let's look at everything else.
KG alleged that he said that Villanueva was a cancer to his team and to the league. Now what kind of statement is that? Even if he didn't use the "cancer patient" statement it is still wrong. And take a look at the picture below. And he's in street clothes. There's still such a thing as crossing the line with trash talk. As for Villanueva's tweet -- what was wrong with it? Crossing what line? C'mon! It's not like about he was tweeting how the wine in Vietnam sucks.
Here's something on the Joakim Noah-KG incident. Below is a video I got from youtube about KG's various scraps. Does this all change my perception of KG? He is and will always be a great player. But being great doesn't mean you can't be a jerk. Notice how when others call his bluff and fight him, then he backs off. Either it's a game or he's phony tough. We'll just have to follow what happens next.
