BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Muntinlupa United Football Club

About a two months ago, I received a couple of balikbayan boxes from Australia containing used and unused football equipment. I got in touch with three different groups -- Muntinlupa United Football Club, the Street Child Football Team of Ed Formoso and a Rotary Club from Cagayan -- to donate the materials. The MUFC team of Leah Madrid is a club I've been trying to help through donations and equipment. We've raised a little money for their participation in a tournament as well as for a little food and drinks. The reason why I get into this is to keep these kids off the streets and away from the bad stuff. You see, MUFC's roster is filled with kids whose fathers are either jail guards or inmates at New Bilibid Prison. Incredible, isn't it? Check out my column on them titled Hope FC. They sent this pic with some of the stuff they got and this just really made my day (along with the Yankees winning Game 5). Glad to help, guys!

Anyone who wants to help out, drop me a line. Any bit of help will be most appreciated. I always give the "help" directly to the team and with several persons as witnesses. Don't need any gloryhounds or other parties taking the stuff away.

And to the good folks of Australia who donated the gear... thanks!!!
