Red Lions, Chiefs mix it up in NCAA
The San Beda Red Lions, take to the hardcourt of the San Juan Arena to battle the Arellano University Chiefs at 4pm. Both teams are seeing action after long lay-offs. The Red Lions last played a week ago in a 101-77 victory over the Perpetual Help Altas while Chiefs’ last match was last July 21 also a rout of the hapless Altas.
“My biggest worry is about our rust,” said Arellano head coach Leo Isaac whose team is at 2-3. “And then San Beda pa yung kalaban.”
The streaking Red Lions are 5-0 and hoping to tie defending champion San Sebastian who won their six straight match after they pulled off a 75-74 squeaker over tough College of Saint Benilde last Monday.
The Red Lions have been getting consistent performances from Garvo Lanete, Borgie Hermida, and Dave Marcelo while Chiefs have their fab four of Vergel Zulueta, Isiah Ciriacruz, Andrian Celada, and Rocky Acidre.
In the first game of today’s double header, hard-luck Benilde clashes with skidding Letran at 2pm. Benilde is at 1-3 while the Knights who are having trouble putting the ball in the hoop are 1-4. Letran has been scoring 62.6 points per game while giving up 67.6. The Blazers, one of the top scoring squads in the NCAA, are averaging a flat 70 points per game.
The Blazers are led by their high-energy guard combo of Mark de Guzman and Carlo Lastimosa while the Knights’ only consistent performer is center-forward Jam Cortes.
