BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

FEU Tamaraws keep rolling. Bag win #6.

FEU Tamaraws keep rolling. Steamroll Adamson for win #6
by rick olivares

The Far Eastern University Tamaraws flashing fine championship form dispatched the hard-fighting Adamson Falcons with a convincing 74-65 win to go 6-0 in the first round of Season 73 of the UAAP.

After being down 0-3 in the first few seconds of the game, FEU steamrolled over Adamson first with their pressure defense and then with their spread the wealth offense that saw them chalk up 21 assists to the measly 6 of the flat-footed opponent.

With the Falcons threatening at the start of the fourth 58-51, FEU head coach Glenn Capacio took no chances and put back his starters. The effect of the return Aldrech Ramos, Ping Exciminiano, and RR Garcia was instantaneous as they racked up eight straight points to douse the fire.

A visibly happy Capacio could only say, “wala na ako masasabi sa mga bata. Basta masayang masaya ako. Nag-rub off yung intensity ng first group sa second group. Finishing na lang siguro kasi may mga turnovers nung huli.”

The Tamaraws used a balanced scoring attack from both inside and outside as RR Garcia scored 16 points, Aldrech Ramos 13, Pippo Noundou 11, and Jens Knuttel 10. It was FEU’s 16th straight win over the Falcons dating back to July 28, 2002.

Adamson’s Alex Nuyles top scored for the match with 23 points but didn’t get enough support from his teammates. Point guard Jerick Canada was the only one in double figures with 11 points.

The Tamaraws will try to go for a first round sweep when they face the UST Growling Tigers next Saturday August 8, 2010 at 4pm at the San Juan Arena. The last time the Tamaraws swept the first round was in 2005, coincidentally, the last time they won the UAAP Men’s Basketball title when Arwind Santos, Mark Isip and Dennis Miranda were still running the show.
