BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

The San Beda Red Lions survived a tough challenge from the Mapua Cardinals to eke out a 69-64 win and go up 3-0 in the NCAA Season 86 wars held at the San Juan Arena.

Point guard Borgie Hermida was able to break free from the shackles of a tight guarding Andretti Stevens as he poured in 10 points in the final 3:25 to turn the tide for the Red Lions. But it was forward Garvo Lanete’s three-pointer off a Hermida assist that gave San Beda the lead for good 57-56 with 3:30 left in the game.

Although San Beda ruled the boards 58-48, Mapua’s interior defense made it almost impossible for the Red Lions’ big men to get an uncontested shot off.  “You have to give it to Mapua,” sighed SBC head coach Frankie Lim who was worried about his team’s slow starts in the past two games. “They played tough and made it very hard for us.”

Lim challenged Hermida, who up to his 4th Quarter explosion had only two points. “I need you to make good decisions,” said the coach as he got right in his point guard’s face after a turnover. “Find your teammates.”

Hermida finished with 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists to lead the Red Lions. Lanete added 14 of his own while Rome de la Rosa had 13 and Dave Marcelo posted a double double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

The Cardinals’ Erwin Cornejo topscored with 20 points while center Jason Pascual added 13 including three three-pointers.

The Red Lions have a two-week layoff when they next play the Letran Knights on July 21.

San Beda 69 - Lanete 14, Hermida 14, de la Rosa 13, Marcelo 12, Daniel 4, Mendoza 4, J. Pascual 2, Caram 2, K. Pascual 2, A. Semerad 2, D. Semerad 0, Villahermosa 0

Mapua 64 - Cornejo 20, Pascual 13, Stevens 9, Acosta 8, Gullermo 6, Sarangay 6, Mangahas 2, Ranises 0, Banal 0, Parala 0

Notes: For the basketball junkie, this was a great game wherein the coaches IMHO won it. You should have seen the "chess match" of moves and the counter-strat of both Frankie Lim and Chito Victolero. Heads up coaching by both. I will write about this in greater detail for my column in Yahoo.
