CC Sabathia flirted with a no-hitter until former Cleveland Indians teammate Kelly Shoppach sent one to the short left field to disrupt the feat. Second time this happened to the big guy. But this was a huge 10-0 win for the Yankees and CC who always starts slow. After getting crushed on a poor outing by Javy Vasquez yesterday, they needed this win. Rubber match tomorrow before they head back to New York after a eight-day road trip. Superb defense by Alex Rodriguez, Robinson Cano, and Mark Teixeira. In the picture above, NY manager Joe Girardi (wearing #28 for the team's quest for a 28th World Series title) takes the ball from his ace after 7 2/3 innings pitched. Relief pitcher David Robertson finished the rest of the game.
Thirty-seven goals in thirty-seven matches started. That's Lionel Messi for Barcelona this year even as Thierry Henry and Bojan Krcic have faltered (gotta give props to Zlatan Ibrahimovic). The year might not be as magical as 2009 but Barca's 2-nil win over Real Madrid in the second El Classico of the season. That was a huge win because it gives them three points clear (80-77 points and a three goal advantage in goal difference 58-55) on the leaderboard over their rivals with 31 games played.
Real's loss at the Bernabeu snapped a 12-match win streak and their first at their storied home field all season. Brazilian Pedro scored in the second half for Barcelona's second.
The three-point lead gives some breathing room with seven games left to play.
Frankie Edgar upset BJ Penn! Hokey Smokes, Bullwinkle! It wasn't just like a punch that got lucky. He dominated Penn throughout the match. I thought I was watching a replay of Penn's loss to GSP the other year. Oh wow. The implications for this! This catapults Edgar into real contender status and will make everyone take him seriously with his four match win streak. What's next, BJ?
Was happy that my fave MMA competitor Matt Hughes won though. Renzo Gracie had no defense for Hughes' leg kicks. Sort of like when Quinton Jackson got chopped down by Forrest Griffin. See picture below.
Anderson Silva, that was some terrible sportsmanship. Now so you don't get bored -- fight GSP!
