BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Swoosh down on the foe (thanks to Raph DS for the title)

Beginning Season 73, all Ateneo de Manila University varsity teams will be wearing the Swoosh of Nike after five years of wearing the three stripes of adidas.

"Adidas has been very good for Ateneo," admitted University Athletics Director Ricky Palou. "But this year, we felt that Nike offered a package that is best suited for what our athletes need."

The blue and white used to wear Nike. In fact, the Ateneo Blue Eagle team of 2002 that won the school's third UAAP Men's Basketball title had Nike as their sponsor.

Added Palou: "The contract with Nike is for three years. Basically, the no lockout provision made the Nike offer more attractive as this avoided complications for Ateneo. Adidas, on the other hand, wanted a lockout. As you very well know, quite a few of our players are endorsing other brands."
