BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

What did he say?

by rick olivares

Sports is life and life is sports. It has been a crazy, unnerving, eye-popping, and bewildering two weeks for sports all over the world. Reading between the headlines, I’ve been trying to make sense of things. They are most probably disjointed and unrelated but at the end of the day, I am reminded of the Three Stooges and their immortal quote when things get confusing, “What did he say?”

"Joke or not, I now recognize that what I did was a mistake and was wrong.”[i]

“I would never intentionally harm or endanger a player.”[ii]

“He had to have someone hit with an axe before he booked anybody in that game.”[iii]

"It took an hour to get my senses back. I didn't feel it. That's the scary part. I'm still woozy at times. I feel grateful to be up and talking. I'm getting better. … The first day was bad. I couldn't remember much. I'm happy it's not worse."[iv]

“You see the training sessions and the players are doing really well. Every single game is important and we have some players coming back from injury. If we can win the next two games, the confidence will be there. It could be a massive difference come the end of the week. I think it is only going to take one or two wins for things to change.”[v]

"Enough is enough. These people think it is a joke and a right to accuse someone wrongly of using steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs. I have tried to just brush it off as a mere pre-fight ploy but I think they have gone overboard."[vi]

“What's my interpretation? What's that supposed to mean? Let me see, my interpretation is that an accident happened.”[vii]

“We never meant to make light of the situation.”[viii]

“I know the people will see through their smoke screens and lies.”[ix]

“It’s someone else’s issue. Not ours.”[x]

"I'm not saying it's wrong. It's how life is. I did say in the show you guys have a job to do. That's why I don't get mad at you. I'd be doing the same thing.''[xi]

"This event can still be a big party.”[xii]

“If she gets in that car and doesn't win races it's not the car, it's not the engines, and it's not the team.”[xiii]

“I want to whip his punk ass.”[xiv]
