The Ateneo Rowing Team: Making waves in the international scene

The Ateneo de Manila Rowing Team is the only university-based rowing team remaining in the Philippines, and is the only other internationally competitive sculling team apart from the Philippine National Rowing Team.

The team, led by its current captain Martin Yambao, is composed of 30 student-athletes (divided into the Men’s and Women’s crews) driven to succeed in both academics and extra-curricular endeavors. The team is internationally competitive, as the only university-level team in the country; the team is pushed to go to Malaysia, Hong Kong or Singapore for competition. In their most recent regatta, the ASEAN Varsity Boat Race 2008, the Ateneo crew bested 13 other universities (ranging from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand) for the 2nd top spot in three out of four events. Top 2 in the university-level of South East Asia was two-years in the making; 4 out of the 4 past crews will return once again for ASEAN Varsity Boat Race 2009 plus 3 more crews, for a total of 16 people (11 Men and 5 Women) all aiming for the gold and the over-all championship.

From humble beginnings in the Manila Boat Club (along the Pasig River) to the La Mesa Dam (training ground of the Philippine National Team) Ateneo rowers undergo intense training both on and off the water just to achieve a competitive edge in the international arena.

With competition time rapidly approaching, the Ateneo Rowing Team is in search of generous alumni to assist them in their preparations for the ASEAN Varsity Boat Race in Putrajaya, Malaysia.
