It was a busy PBA Draft Day for Burger King as they picked former Ateneo and Western Kentucky center Japeth Aguilar as the number one over-all selection then traded its No.3 pick in Fil-American guard Chris Ross of Marshall University to the Coca Cola Tigers for the latter’s first-round pick in 2010 and Marvin Cruz and their two second round picks to for Ronjay Buenafe. The team concluded its wheeling and dealing by taking the University of Manila Hawks’ Ronnie Matias in the first round at No. 8. The newbies on BK helps their squad and turns them into instant contenders.
Purefoods added some ceiling and defense when it grabbed Rico Maierhofer as the No. 2 overall pick. Great draft pick. Maierhofer will help this team rev up their fastbreak and is versatile enough to match up with the other teams' frontline.
Rain or Shine reinforced its frontline when they picked for UAAP MVP and UST Growling Tiger Jervy Cruz at No. 4 and added UE point guard Marcy Arellano at No. 14 in the second round. Excellent choice of Cruz. Not sure about Arellano though.
Alaska Aces got some help for Rey Hugnatan and Sonny Thoss when they went for 6’5” Filipino-Swiss Michael Burtscher at No. 5 in the first round and shored up their outside game with the Mapua Cardinals’ Sean Co in the second round.
Barako Bull, showed that any rumors of their franchise’s demise are unfounded as they received Sta. Lucia Realty’s first-round pick for Gabby Espinas and added San Beda College’s Ogie Menor. They added more scoring sock with their picks of Benedict Fernandez at No. 11 overall and former NU stud Edwin Asoro at No. 12 in the second round. Does the selection mean that Jojo Duncil is on the outs? Fernandez could be a star here. Pero meron pa ba kayong pambayad sa mga player?
Barangay Ginebra further clogged its crowded backcourt when they tabbed Fil-Am guard Chris Timberlake at No. 7 overall then chose Orlando Darroya of the Arellano University Chiefs in the second round. Another squad with an overload of guards and forwards. If anything, this team needed to get better upfront. Pero kasi naman hindi nagaggamit yung iba.
Recent Fiesta Conference champion San Miguel closed out the first round with the selection of James Sena of Jose Rizal University with the No. 9 pick. Hmm. Where does Sena fit into the Beermen's scheme of things?
Sta. Lucia had only draft pick and they used it to select Mark Benitez the former DLSU center who was once embroiled in an eligibility issue in the UAAP. This guy has been waiting for sometime to get a chance to go to the PBA. Good luck with it, Mark!
Former UST forward Francis Allera and La Salle forward-center PJ Walsham were selected by Coke (by virtue of its trade with Burger King) in the second round.
The Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters now have a logjam at the point guard position when they drafted Kevin White, the nephew of Jimmy Alapag, with its solitary pick at No. 18 overall. Aside from Alapag, they also have Jason Castro and little used Pong Escobal. So what was up with this pick? To keep Alapag happy? Eh si Escobal sayang talaga hindi ginagamit.
