Going Down to Liverpool

For almost as long as I can remember, I was a fan of the New York Cosmos and Liverpool FC. I may root now for Real Madrid and Chelsea, but the one constant in my football dreams is Liverpool. If you think that I became a fan of LFC's because of the Beatles then that's false. The Fab Four rooted for Everton if I recall correctly.

I became a fan with Kenny Dalglish and then that great attacking line of John Barnes (yeah!), John Aldridge, and Ian Rush.

In the pantheon of great sports documentaries, No Heart As Big, the story of 2001-02 season is inspiring, well-directed, and has a great soundtrack to go with the excellent photography and cinematography. The Reds have not won an English title in 18 long years (despite their historic Treble the previous year) and during that ill-fated season when they lost manager Gerard Houllier (heart surgery) and defender Markus Babbel (a virus that knocked him out for a whole season). The season is recounted as the team prepared for the following season as they went to training camp in the lush and beautiful Bad Ragaz in Switzerland.

No Heart as Big was filmed after their historic Treble of 2000-01 when scored an FA Cup Final victory against Arsenal, overcame Alaves 5-4 in the UEFA Cup and the Worthington Cup.

Liverpool is the only team to complete two trebles (including the 1983-84 season where they won the League, the League Cup and the European Cup). and before their stirring Champions League and Super Cup victories of 2005. The Reds are have won more trophies than any other English club.

But No Heart as Big is right up their with the New York Yankees' 2001 season when they made the World Series after that modern-day of infamy in 9-11.

And they beat Aston Villa 2-1 in a road game for the first match of the season. next up --- Chelsea!
