BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Rebisco Volleyball League: La Salle Lipa takes Pool B top seed with win over HRC

La Salle Lipa takes Pool B top seed with win over HRC

“Smart” is how De La Salle Lipa head coach Ronwald Dimaculangan described his team’s play in a 25-14, 25-20 win over Holy Rosary College.

The two erstwhile undefeated squads in Pool B – eaching toting a 4-0 record – parted ways in the final match of the preliminaries of the Rebisco Volleyball League.

The coach may be modest but the Green Chevrons put on a clinic on service excellent, strong net defense, and power volleyball in upending the hometown favorite.

Setter Janel Maraguinot set the tone for the match by holding serve for seven consecutive possessions. The younger sister of Ateneo Lady Eagle star Jhoana Maraguinot served three aces in the midst of the scorching run that silenced the pre-dominant HRC crowd that packed the Sta. Rosa Sports Complex. By the time, the HRC Rhinos got to serve, the score was 7-1 and they never got back into the fight.

Conspicuously silent was team captain and leading scorer Trisha Genesis who was held to one point and sat for long stretches. Minus their best player, Aliah Marce carried HRC scoring 10 points. But it wasn’t enough as La Salle Lipa was just too good.

Mirgie Bautista led La Salle with 11 points while Alleiah Malaluan added 9.

“I am not sure if Trisha was mentally prepared for the match,” wondered Rhinos head coach Lerma Giron who couldn’t hide her disappointment post-match. “But at least we’re in the semi-finals.”

“For us, it’s one game at a time, clarified Dimaculangan. “It isn’t that we were avoiding NU. Kahit sino. We just want to concentrate on the game at hand. All we have done is get the top seed of Pool B. Tomorrow is another day.”
