BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Ben Mbala is kicking butt in AfroBasket 2017!

Ben Mbala is tearing up the competition in AfroBasket 2017.

La Salle’s center is suiting up for his native Cameroon in the continental competition.

In Cameroon’s opening day 68-51 loss to Tunisia, Mbala tallied 15 points and 6 rebounds.

Cameroon bounced back with a 96-54 win versus Guinea and Mbala was adjudged the top performer when he posted 24 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, and 4 steals for plus-25 efficiency rating.

During the third day of competition, an 81-77 triumph over Rwanda, Big Ben posted his first double double of 16 points and 15 rebounds to go with 1 steal and 1 block. He finished with another plus-20 efficiency rating.

After three games, Mbala is AfroBasket’s third leading scorer with 18.3 points a game and the third best rebounder with 9.0.

Hats off to this top-class baller! Good job.

  1. Is it true is that he plays the SMALL FORWARD position in that team? Lots of tall folks over there, and it highlights his versatility.
