BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Ben MBala is Premier Cup Player of the Week

Ben MBala is Premier Cup Player of the Week

With the first week of the annual FilOil Flying V Premier Cup out of the way, La Salle’s Ben Mbala who towed the Green Archers to a 1-1 record was named Player of the Week.

The bull-strong Cameroonian center once more put up monster numbers for the week – 26.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks.

Joining Mbala in the Best Five of the Week are Jose Rizal University’s Teytey Teodoro, CJ Perez of the Lyceum of the Philippines University, University of the East’s Alvin Pasaol, and National University’s JJ Alejandro.

Teodoro who led the Heavy Bombers to a 2-0 record for the week including an opening day win over La Salle, averaged 18.5 points and 3.0 rebounds in the wins. Perez wreaked havoc against his former team, Ateneo, by tallying 13 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. UE’s tough under-sized forward, Pasaol, led the Red Warriors to a 1-1 record and averaged 21.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 1.5 assists. Alejandro, one of two remaining players (along with forward Dave Wilson Yu) on NU who were with their UAAP Season 77 championship squad, led his side with 25 points and nine rebounds in a win over Emilio Aguinaldo College.

Other notable performers of the opening week include Adamson University’s Jerie Pingoy and Sean Manganti, JRU’s Jed Mendoza, College of St. Benilde’s Gerard Castor, and Ateneo’s Mike Nieto and Thirdy Ravena.
