BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. Michael Oliver will continue to Coach the Batang Gilas national youth team. This was announced last Thursday, February 2, by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Executive Director Renauld "Sonny" Barrios.

Oliver previously coached Batang Gilas in 2015 during the 2015 U16 Seaba championship that was held in Cagayan De Oro where they emerged SEABA Champions and qualified them to play in the 2016 FIBA Asia U18 Championship in Tehran, Iran.  As a player, Oliver won a UAAP seniors championship with Far Eastern University in 1997 and he coached the FEU Baby Tamaraws to a UAAP Juniors crown in 2012.

The SBP will announce soon the schedule for the upcoming SEABA tournament that the Philippines is hosting this summer of 2017 where both the Men's and U16 Men's categories will be played simultaneously.

According to Batang Gilas team manager Andrew Teh, "Oliver's announcement is a welcome one because now we can prepare in earnest for the tournament."
