BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Inspired by the Filipino Heritage Night of Golden State Warriors, Fil-Am Sports New Jersey is collaborating with National Basketball Association club, the New York Knicks, to host the first ever Filipino Heritage Night!

Slated for the 4th of January, 2017, at the world-famous Madison Square Garden on the night the Knicks will play the visiting Milwaukee Bucks, 20 Filipino-Americans from the Tri-State area (New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut) will play five-on-five basketball before the main match. The proceeds of the heritage event will fund the expenses of Fil-Am Sports Team USA to participate in the upcoming SM-National Basketball Training Center National Finals slated for next March.

During last the 2016 SM-NBTC National championship, a team of Filipino-Canadians led by the highly recruited James Canlas and a team from Thailand that was prominently led by expatriate Filipinos participated in the tournament.

In the spirit of the night, limited edition shirts will be made available. Fil-Am youths will play on the actual New York Knicks court prior to tip off. "This is a dream come true. Filipinos love basketball. We are honored to present a night dedicated to our heritage and celebrate with our fellow kababayans,” said event coordinator Aimee Ulep.

Some of the Knicks players will be on hand for the ceremonial tip-off and to give the Fil-Am youth some encouraging words.

The SM-NBTC is officially sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas and is considered one of its grassroots programs. For this season, over 700 high schools will be participating in the tournament for the right to be crowned as the best secondary school team in the country.
