BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Valdez to be feted 2nd Volleyball MVP Award

Superstar Alyssa Valdez, who led Ateneo to a 14-match elimination round sweep and an outright finals berth will be feted her second successive Most Valuable Player Award come Game 1 of the UAAP Season 77 Women’s Volleyball Finals.

Valdez, who compiled 94.082 statistical points, to lead the field edged La Salle’s Ara Galang for the award. Galang finished with 91.200 statistical points.

The Ateneo Lady Eagles’ captain will also take home awards for Best Scorer and Best Server. Teammate and libero Dennise Lazaro will likewise be named Best Receiver for the second consecutive year with a 27.5 efficiency rating.

Ateneo’s setter par excellence, Julia Morado, is the league’s Best Setter after norming 9.02 sets per set.

Last year’s Rookie of the Year, Alyja Daphne Santiago will take home the Best Attacker Award as she edged Valdez in terms of the success rate – 39.3% versus the Atenean’s 38.53%.

UST’s Marivic Meneses averaged 0.94 blocks per set to take the Women’s Division’s Best Blocker plum.


FEU’s Christine Agno averaged 3.34 digs per set to take the Best Digger Award  while Ennajie Laure bags the Rookie of the Year Award.
