BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

When Ateneo copped its first women’s volleyball crown last UAAP Season 76, they did so on March 15, 2014. This second straight title this just concluded Season 77 – it was on March 14, 2015.

In Season 74, Ateneo took one set from La Salle in their first round meeting; two in the second round; and three in the first match of the finals. But the Lady Spikers took the next two games.

In Season 75, Ateneo lost in five sets in the first round then in the second round, was swept in three sets. In the finals meeting, Ateneo lost a five-setter in Game One after which they were swept in Game Two.

In Season 76, La Salle swept Ateneo in their two elimination round meetings. Once they got in the Finals, the Lady Eagles registered a historic feat when they overhauled the Lady Spikers’ thrice-to-beat advantage to claim its first ever crown.

In Season 77, La Salle took two sets in a five-set loss to Ateneo in the first round. One set in the second round. In the finals, they didn’t win a single set.

You can say from Season 74 to 77, the Lady Eagles began their mastery of the Lady Spikers.

The Lady Eagles became the first team in UAAP Women’s Volleyball to sweep a season and go 16-0. Their team is composed of 14 players plus 2 coaches for a total of 16 people.


As for the Ateneo bonfire on – look at the numbers in descending order -- 3-21-15 (March 15, 2015), the three college championship teams include a three-peat team (baseball), a back-to-back squad (women’s volleyball), and a first-timer (men’s volleyball).

    incredible coincidences...3-2-1...3peat, 2peat, first time...next season that will become 4peat, 3peat, 2peat...! also aly's jersey no. 2 has other twists & trysts....coincidentally her jersey no. 2 is just her lucky no. ....2x champions....2x mvp....2x best scorer....2x best server....take these four 2s and we have sweep 16 that's a factor of 2's (forget your math...? 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 16...!) see what i mean....she and the team's blessed....and she's just 21...! also 21000 crowd....! the last 2 points to championship by 2 dropballs by jia,,,the last 2 points to winning game 1 by 2 spikes of jho maraguinot...! what else...?!...also double celebration for ayel, denden and ella for this championship and their graduation...what blessings humility, heartstrong, happy and unity brings to a team....God bless....!
