BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters paid tribute to the 44 Special Action Force police who were killed last Sunday, January 25, at Mamasapano, Maguindanao by wearing a black patch with the number “44” on their jerseys during a match against the NLEX Road Warriors on Tuesday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

“We wanted to pay tribute to the 44 SAF personnel who perished last week,” bared RoS head coach Yeng Guiao at the half. “It’s the least that we can do – to sympathize with the families and colleagues of the 44. I asked management if it was all right to pay a special tribute and they felt it was a good gesture. We are not making any political statements it is simply our way of sympathizing.”

Added Elasto Painters gunner Paul Lee, “Grabe yung nangyari. Kahit wala ka doon masakit yung pangyayari na yun. Gusto lang namin maki-simpatiya sa mga pamilya ng mga namatayan. At sana bigyan sila ng hustisya at tulong para sa mga pamilya ng mga nasawi.”

“It’s a tragedy,” lamented RoS forward Gabe Norwood. “It’s a terrible thing to comprehend.”
