BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Hatfield bids Ramon Ang goodbye but the SMC boss leaves the door open for a comeback.

Rudy Hatfield who announced his retirement from the PBA the other day met with Ramon S. Ang, the President and Chief Operating Officer of San Miguel Corporation yesterday. Hatfield described the meeting as "brief but all good". Ang recited a litany of Hatfield's achievements with Ginebra as the grateful player listened on. The SMC boss accepted Hatfield's desire to spend more time with his family and his plans to try out a juice business in the United States. But according to Hatfield, Ang also said that he is not closing the door on a possible Hatfield comeback with Ginebra should the 35-year old baller feel the need to scratch that basketball itch again. Hatfield said that he'll cross the line when he gets there but right now he is looking forward to doing something else.
