BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Hey, Dwight Howard... the signs are all over the place.

I like what the Los Angeles Lakers are doing. The nightmare that was last season is over and they know that for this franchise, the bumps on the road are infrequent but they do happen. Unlike in 2004 when they blew up that team that lost to the Detroit Pistons in the NBA Finals, they are looking to give this team another chance by keeping key players. It isn't every day where you land a top flight center and maybe if they fix things, it will be much better for them in the next season. Those billboards that appear all over Los Angeles are a cool way of telling Dwight Howard publicly that they want him to stay and he's a major part of the their plans. For all the drama and tension of the last season, the Lakers are still one of the best sports franchises (and they take care of their people there).

I don't remember now but did Cleveland do something for LeBron James before he bolted for South Beach? But it worked out for LBJ in Miami. Just too bad he's become one of the most reviled athletes. But I am sure that history will be kind to him later. After all, he's not a bad guy.
