BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

My UAAP Season 75 Men's Football Awards

My UAAP Season 75 Football Awards

I know the league waits until the end of the season to announce the winners but here is my take on the awardees and (it should be close to the league’s as well).

Best Striker – Jesus Melliza (FEU)
Either Melliza or UP’s scintillating Jinggoy Valmayor

Best Midfielder – Paolo Bugas or Arnel Amita (FEU).
Or Ateneo’s Val Calvo or Mikko Mabanag and UP’s Daniel Gadia
Personally, I will award this to Amita (who is FEU’s version of Barcelona’s Xavi) because he tracks back on defense and leads the counter attack. Bugas is like Iniesta where he finds Melliza (who is their Messi) for throughballs.

Best Defender – Gico Noel (Ateneo)
Also include in the list Greggy Yang (DLSU) and Deo Segunial (UP)

Best Goalkeeper – Nick O’Donnell (Ateneo)
Has conceded one goal all season long.

Rookie of the Year:
Any of the two: Ateneo’s Val Calvo or Nick O’Donnell

Coach of the Year: Ateneo’s JP Merida
From second to the last to first after two rounds.

And here is my Starting XI:

Nick O'Donnell

Raymark Fernandez     Deo Segunial     Gico Noel     Greggy Yang

Mikko Mabanag     Arnel Amita     Paolo Bugas     Val Calvo

Jon Melliza     Jinggoy Valmayor

Bench: Ace Villanueva (UP- GK), Enzo Bonoan (Ateneo - DF), Dexter Chio (FEU -- DF), Nathan Alquiros (La Salle - MF), Chy VillaseƱor (FEU - MF), Derico Diamante (La Salle - FW), Daniel Gadia (UP -- FW)

  1. Hi Rick , on a related topic, have the S75 Women's Volleyball Awardees been announced? I may have read a blog post saying ADMU's A. Valdez is the season's MVP ... thank you!

  2. Pwede rin si Gadia as rookie of the year, as long as UP wins. Solid yung bata.

    2. Hi, ang sa akin po pag dating sa mga best defender, mid fielder , forwards at coach dapat ito ay magmumula sa champion team, simple kasi champion nga sila, best in every department. Sa best striker kung ang basehan eh paramihan ng goal eh hands down si jonjon melliza , talaga namang kahanga hanga ang talento ng baTa, I agree jinggoy valmayor should also be considered considering ng halos buong back line eh dinedepensahan sya but still he manages to score goals that matters most...
