BLEACHERS BREW EST. MAY 2006

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". It's like this, it's an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis' great jazz album Bitches Brew. That's how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fear's second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there.

Juninho goes to the New York Red Bulls

One of my all-time favorite footballers has come to the New York Red Bulls -- Juninho. The world's best free kick specialist will be joining Thierry Henry and Tim Cahill with the Red Bulls next MLS season. It will likewise be a reunion with former Lyon manager Gerard Houillier who serves as the club's Global Sporting Director.

Became a fan of the Brazilian when he joined Lyon in the French Ligue 1 where he not only electrified the team with his scoring but also with his assists. Also followed him on the Selecao side that had players like Dida, Cafu, Ze Roberto, Kaka, Fred, Roberto Carlos, and Emerson among others.

When he left Lyon, he joined Qatari club Al Gharafa that he led to the title. He went back to his old Brazilian club Vasco da Gama before signing with the Red Bulls. Hopefully, the MLS Cup title will come to New York this next season.
